Glasgow Paediatric Neurosurgery

Fellowship

Our Senior Clinical Fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurgery was established in 2013. The fellowship provides, post-CCT subspecialty training in all aspects of Paediatric Neurosurgery, including complex craniofacial surgery.

The programme runs for a year; with the option to extend for up to a further year if required.

The Senior Clinical Fellow is fully committed to the paediatric service (and has no formal role in the adult neurosurgical team, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital). Out of hours, they are part of the consultant rota, leading a two tier team of neurosurgical resident doctors, with designated support from one of the consultant paediatric neurosurgeons.

The Senior Clinical Fellow takes a lead role in the day to day activity of the unit, leading ward rounds, liaising with the advanced nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists and providing training and supervision to the neurosurgical resident doctors rotating through our department as part of their general training.

For the last 4 years, the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow has consistently been ranked as one of the top three paediatric neurosurgical units in the UK and Ireland, for the operative experience it delivers for its trainees. This is demonstrated in both the total number of procedures and the number of complex (category 3) procedures where a trainee is lead surgeon, (British Paediatric Neurosurgical Group, Annual Operative Audit 2021-24). (See figure 1 & 2 at bottom of page)

The Senior Clinical Fellow plays an integral role in the research and audit generated by our department and will have the opportunity to publish and present their work at national and international meetings.

All our previous Senior Clinical Fellows have been appointed to substantive neurosurgical posts in the UK and Europe; using the skills and knowledge gained during their time with us, to deliver excellent neurosurgical care for paediatric patients.

The department, in conjunction with the Glasgow Neuro Society, has also hosted some of the worlds leading neurosurgeons for educational visits including Professor Henry Brem, Director of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins; Professor George Jallo, the then Director of Paediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins; Professor Robert Martuza, the then Chief of Neurosurgery at Harvard; Professor Charlie Teo from Australia; and the late Professor James Goodrich from New York.
